working for the weekend

It's Friday, you've just finished lunch, and let's face it – you're in no mood to get back to work. So put those afternoon ambitions on hold, brew yourself a nice cuppa and settle in with our weekly round-up of all things awesome…

The tech-savvy among you should get laugh or two from Intel's new online game, IT Manager III – or at least from this rather weird promo video. After choosing your favourite snack and, er, network configuration, you play an overworked tech support person who has to run around solving employees' tech problems, fixing the servers, zapping stuff à la Matrix etc. Pretty fun, unless you actually are an IT manager.

Elsewhere online we've laughed at some football fashion disasters, marveled at the world's first computer-less blogger and debated Total’s Film’s top 8 concert movies – surely a bit of an old man’s list that missing some recent greats? The Libertines on home video? Sonic Youth in The Year Punk Broke? Join the discussion and enter our Taking Woodstock competition on the Film Club while you’re at it.

Back in the real world, yesterday saw the arrival of the subtle mob – a quieter take on the now-ubiquitous flashmob. You can take part tonight in Bristol, or tomorrow in Liverpool – don’t forget to send us your pics! If you’re in London, check out our friends at BAFTA’s Games Networking Night, for anyone working in (or just interested in) the games industry.

Finally, there’s the excting prospect of walking, projecting texts and even cycling amongst some giant bubbles in the sky. It’s all part of a proposal for the Olympics called The Cloud – and with backing from Google and engineering firm ARUP we wouldn’t be surprised if they pulled it off – or should we say up?

That’s it for this week, but we’ll be back next Friday with some ideas for your Christmas wishlist. Pens at the ready!

Orange's Multimedia Store opens to wow the customers

We've been leaving a trail of teaser photos since August, but now we can reveal that Orange's first ever Multimedia Store is open for business.

As you read, we're there talking to the first customers and finding out what they think of this one-of-a-kind store. Keep your eyes peeled for our video tomorrow.

We first visited a long time ago, well before the transformation was complete. It was a veritable bomb site as the old store was stripped back to the bare bones.

But it's come a long way since. Last week, it was really starting to take shape and the team worked like Trojans to make it happen.

Designed to encourage people to interact and have fun with technology using their mobile phones, the Multimedia Store is stuffed full of toys and gadgets to play with.

As you enter, you immediately come across a large cinema area. Pull up a pew here to watch product demos and videos of Orange events, like the recent Orange RockCorps gig.

To your left is a floor-to-ceiling interactive screen; one of the biggest in the UK. Take part in creating the world's largest virtual Mexican wave by asking a member of staff to record you doing your wave. Shortly afterwards you'll see yourself up on the screen, along with all the other wavers. Here's some testing going on.

Further into the store are a selection of spanky handsets hanging down from different pods, just ripe for you to get testing. They're helpfully divided into categories, so social media mavens, film fans, music addicts and those on the move and in need of sat nav, can all find recommendations right for their needs.

There's also a games pod, where you can use a mobile phone to play computer games on a large TV screen, and a whole counter of phones, laptops and accessories to browse.

We think it's a great success, but the proof will be in the pudding when we talk to people visiting the store today. And we can't wait to show you their reactions :)

Snake slithers into view from Orange Film Studios

Imagine a monster with such a horrifyingly mammoth appetite, it will eat anything and everything in its path... and as it gobbles up its terrified victims, it just gets bigger and bigger...

Well, the legendary mobile game 'Snake' does just that.

Sigourney Weaver stars in SNAKE, the epic cinematic interpretation of the famous game. You'll be able to watch this, the latest cinema advert brought to you from Orange Film Studios, in cinemas across the country, right before your film begins.

SNAKE is set in an ancient land of mystery and magic. The computer-generated snake eats up as many people as possible. Can Sigourney's character stop it from destroying the human race? Not likely, if Director Dresden and Producer Eliot have anything to do with it...

To accompany SNAKE, a game of the movie of the game (still with us?!) has been created too. Dresden explained the concept to us:

"The format's simplicity itself. Imagine the most horrifying thing in the world. It's being eaten alive by a snake, right? The genius of SNAKE is that it takes that and just runs with it. Lots of people get eaten. And I means like, loads."

We've embedded the SNAKE game above for you to have a play. See how far you can get, as each level gets faster and provides more obstacles for you to master. We got to level 5, so not exactly top of the leader board, but it's a lot of fun to fill some afternoon downtime with.

Even better, you can share and play it with your Facebook pals and embed it on your site, or blog, too. Now what could be more fun than eating up your own mates?

We're struggling with that one, you know ;-)

mobile games: retro remembrance

Let us take you by the hand and lead you through the annals of mobile gaming history. We're going back to 1997 and the launch of the Nokia 6610, the first phone to feature Snake. That perpetually hungry and ever-growing line of black cubes set against a green background... ah, we're getting misty-eyed thinking about it.

So in the wake of our brilliant retro phone hunt earlier this year, we want you to tell us all about the first mobile games you played. What did you love about them? What phone were they on? What was cool about mobile gaming for you, back in the day?

Perhaps you were a WAP kid who couldn't get enough of Sorcery or Alien Fish Exchange. Maybe your love of games was sealed in the era of Java, thanks to the release of the Nokia 3410 and the Siemens M50. (We had one of those Siemens, blissful it was). Or maybe it was dedicated mobile gaming device, the Gizmondo, that switched you onto the joys of gaming on the move.

Whatever it was, we want to hear your stories, so get involved in the comments. Or if you like, drop us a line on Twitter @thefeedblog.

Wishing you bon voyage down memory lane :)

After Four Friday Fun

It's nearly four o'clock on a Friday. That means time to down tools, kick back and relax with some great weblinks and distractions.

How are feeling about Facebook these days? Is your love fizzling out? In the wake of several high profile desertions, the BBC are asking whether Facebook is fizzling out. Bill Gates recently dumped the network after complaining he had "too many friends". Are you going to join him?

Meanwhile, in another corner of the web, recent research shows the true state of of the much hyped Twitter community.

A big study was released in the US this week showing how dangerous it is to text and drive. Risk of collisions, the research discovered, rocketting 2300% when a driver was SMS and steering.

To prove the point, the NYT TImes develop a cool simulator for you to see yourself.

For slightly lighter entertaining, we found this fantastically clever and simple Flash game. See if you can get to the dinosaur.

I want a version for my LG KP500 NOW. Surely this is a game made for a stylus?

Chris James of Pocket Gamer meets The Feed

Earlier this week Chris James, the man behind mobile gaming website Pocket Gamer, popped by to say hello to us at The Feed.

We wanted to pick his brains about the mobile gaming industry and because he's a good chap, he obliged.

Watch the interview above and if you like it, do tell us in the comments. Chris will be ever so chuffed.

Coming up soon: interview with Orange's Head of Mobile Gaming, Neil Holroyd.
