the greatest movie never made

Following the success of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick set out to make a film about Napoleon Bonaparte – an epic that might have seen Jack Nicholson playing the French emperor! Kubrick filled boxes and boxes with research material, built a vast picture library and told his backers it would be "the best movie ever made".

Unfortunately, another big Napoleon-themed film was released – and flopped – before Kubrick even starting filming, and the idea was consigned to history. Until now.

Following on from their Stanley Kubrick archive book – which you can win this week on the Orange Film Club page – art book publisher Taschen have created a new tome as epic as Kubrick's unfinished masterpiece. Launched this week at a party at Kubrick's estate near Harpendon, the giant book hides ten smaller ones inside a secret compartment – a treasure trove to match the one Kubrick accumulated while doing his meticulous research. There's the script, a vast picture book of period details, letters to Kubrick's Napoleon expert and more...

Reading through it all, you get the feeling it would have been an amazing film – but at least now we get to see what could have been. For pictures of the launch – where Stanley Kubrick's widow Christiane signed copies – visit our Orange Film Club page. You can also win a ten film Kubrick box set and Taschen's original Kubrick archives book.
