Friday's boredom busters

Mobile banking in Africa is a resounding success story

Ah. Friday. You made it. See? Wasn't that hard ;)

Today has been a top week in tech. Delve in...

On this day in 1777, Danish physicist and chemist Hans Christian Orsted was born. He is celebrated for discovering that electric currents can create magnetic fields. Clever chap eh?

Via Springwise, we’ve discovered PocketSmith, an online tool to plan your finances to the letter (or rather number). Its ability to predict your future bank balance based on the figures you’ve already plugged in sets it apart from similar websites. Time to own up about those sneaky cabs and café lattes then.

We’ve been watching the digital posturing between Facebook and Twitter with glee this week (read all about it here), but the BBC tech blog has some insights that might take a load off Facebook’s mind. According to Gartner’s 2009 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies report, Twitter is about to have an epic FAIL in the popularity stakes. We are glued to this to see what will happen, but it's just one opinion after all and we're certainly still Tweeting with the best of them. What do you think? Sick of Twitter or hungry for more?

In Kenya, where access to traditional banking facilities or the internet is difficult, mobile banking is proving to be a huge success story. The video above shows the handsets in action. But interestingly, neighbouring Tanzania hasn’t been quite so successful yet, which we think has a lot to do with the fact it's a far more sparsely populated country. Still, it's a phenomenon we'll be keeping top of our watch list.

And finally, this should keep you entertained. From Insightts Blog, here’s this week’s top 20 viral video chart. There’s some movie stuff in there that should keep our pals over at Orange Film Club amused, plus plenty of other quirks to speed up Friday.

See you Monday Feeders :)
