snowbound UK reaches for the mobile

Tower Bridge in a blizzard on Sunday night

Hot on the heels of the snow dump the UK is experiencing this week (and there will be more to come if the weather report is anything to go by!), was a flurry of activity on the mobile and broadband networks.

Tech Radar and other blogs like Textually.org are a-buzz with the stats. 'The Big Freeze' as it's being called, caused an unprecedented spike in texts, picture messaging and other data usage.

Orange has reported significantly higher mobile broadband activity than normal. The busiest time was between 7am and 8.30am, as people contacted work colleagues to let them know they were snowed in.

Later on it was picture messaging and mobile broadband that was kept occupied as people shared photos and videos of back gardens given the full Narnia treatment, snowball fights and giant snowmen. And of course, for many of us, owning a dongle meant the snow didn't stop us from working from home.

Thumbs were certainly kept busy as text messaging rose from an average of 71 million to over 86 million messages sent.

At The Feed, we loved that Twitter went bananas yesterday too, with heaps of happy people posting their Flickr and TwitPic links for others to enjoy. And thanks to Crack Unit for introducing us to Twist, which shows us just how crazy the Twitter network went for snow, trains and snowmen. That's some spike.

How did you record the snow on your mobile, social networking or Twitter account? Share your links with us in the comments.
